You Are What You Is
My name is Morgan Benson.
When I was a young boy, I remember moseying on down to the old mill with
the old man to dig up some worms for our Tuesday fishing trip, back before I
developed the sensibilities that now makes similar practices unthinkable.
On one such occasion, an old hobo had gone and sat himself down on a rock,
to rest his tired feet and, to our liking, sing himself back to his full strength
with haunting blue melodies and a raw poetry that expressed grief, serenity,
and defiance all at once, sung to a rhythm that made my knee grow spiritual.
My father, canning the worms, offered the morning’s first catch should the
tramp care to linger, which he declined, sharing his homespun philosophy:
“You are what you is, boy,” he said. “I’m a cliché, but you is the writer.”
